As a costume student, a lot of Hannah’s everyday life revolves around art and creating. When I think of them I picture a mess of color and objects that come together to form the soft caringness of one of my greatest friends. I hoped to reflect this idea through the mess of their room and curled wig and the caringness they put into their work.
Hannah German (she/her), 20, has been my best friend since 7th grade. She has an intense passion for many different art forms including makeup, sewing, costume design, and traditional drawing.
As she prepares to put on her costume (pictured in other photos), Hannah applies makeup to enhance a certain characterization within the costume. Here, she is wearing brown contacts to darken her natural blue eyes and is coloring her brows to be a more reddish color to match the orange wig she will be wearing.
Their room is pretty small so they got a loft bed around the time they started college so they have more room for a work space. On the left is their sewing supplies, to the right is makeup and jewelry and scattered around the mirrors are photos and art. An organized chaos.
For a while Han got really into doll customization and bought herself a medium sized ball-jointed doll. The face, hair, and clothes the doll wears are all done by Han’s own hands and a lot of love and care has been put into this doll. The doll is named Psyche, after the Greek mythos.
Han’s work space can get very chaotic and messy when they really get into a project. Here they are working on designing characters and outlining the plot for a graphic novel series they have been working on. They are hoping to publish it on an online space like webtoons.
A moon goddess altar is set up in Hannah’s room. She identifies as a witch and her alter set up includes candles, gifts, and especially healing crystals as well as a lot of hand made dolls and herbs. Not pictured, but still there are several tarot card decks she uses for readings.
Han (left) helping me (right) put on makeup. I have never been good at makeup so when the need arises it is always her that does it for me. It has become a sort of ritual since middle school that I am their makeup guinea pig.
This is the type of outfit Hannah would traditionally wear to the Renaissance Faire in Tuxedo Park. The whole costume is comprised of white underdress and different skirts layered over one another along with a hand made lace up vest.
